The Nubian Heritage Quilters Guild (NHQG) celebrates their 29th Anniversary with a much anticipated quilt exhibit “Honoring Our Heritage: One Stitch at a Time” at the Montclair History Center’s Crane House & Historic YWCA Museum this June. In addition to a variety of a quilting styles, NHQG will present quilts and wall hangings that showcase patchwork, applique, collage and abstract textiles. Additional special exhibits include: Legacy of Black Mermaids, African American Suffragists, African Gala, Mardi Gras Masks, NHQG Retreat, Unique Pincushions, African Village, Fabric Postcards. In lieu of regular tour admission prices, suggested donations of $5 per visitor will be honored.
On Thursday, June 13th join the History at Home: Legacy of Black Mermaids with the Nubian Heritage Quilters Guild on Zoom at 7 pm. Drawn from the rich folklore of Water Goddesses and Mermen, Black Mermaids traveled with the enslaved to comfort them on the ships that took them away from their homeland. NHQG celebrates their 29th Anniversary with this virtual program and the much anticipated quilt exhibit. "Black Mermaids Swimming form Africa to America" opens tomorrow in Charleston, SC. Mermaid Fabrics is in this exhibit!! "In my world, Black Mermaids are sewing enthusiasts and textile artists. They are inspired by antique sewing machines, as well as energized by exotic fabrics and embellishments. Surrounded by schools of fish, this mermaid embarks on an impromptu trip to her local (underwater) fabric store, to stimulate her creativity. The trip was a huge success, not only purchasing a bolt of fabric and remnant bundles, but meeting with fellow creatives as well.
